has anyone had a dislocated elbow? after skiing in niederau for 21 years, i slipped and fell on ice outside the wastlhof hotel. am still in plaster over 3 weeks later and doctor here says i won't have full extensionin my arm, altho' i WILL ski again!
it hurts even within the plaster which is due to come off this week followed by physio. has anyone had to wear an elbow support following the injury?
thanks, L.

You poor thing. It sounds a really horrible injury. I hope you get the full use of your arm back. But if not, at least it sounds as though you will still be able to ski :D

Sorry to hear about your elbow injury, elbows, when injured, pose problems and the Doctor is giving you the worst senario. However, with intense physio and the will to regain as much movement as possible you will be back on the piste before to long. I have a friend who has suffered a severe elbow injury which required surgery. This resulted in the loss of some extension in the injured arm however, he continues to ski with no problems. It is just such bad luck slipping up outside the hotel!

thanks, alastair,
it didn't help that i had had a few sherries, nor that i was on my way to the sunday night ski show and had my ski school jacket on at the time (shuffling out of kufstein hospital the following morning with the jacket and arm in plaster was a tad embarassing!)
if you're going to do this sort of thing, then do it in austria: for the past 2 weeks i've waited a total of nearly 6 hours at walsall hospital fracture clinic. the medical attention in austria (albeit insured) was second to none. L.

Ah, Soft drinks only for you in future. ) The pain is likely because the elbow area is covered with many nerve endings and the joint itself is a complex one allowing extension, rotation and flexion. Hence when injured it can become complicated. You can purchase, if required, one of those elasticated supports.

I knew about your injury, L, but had thought it would have moved on by now. I was chatting with Nick about it a couple of days ago. That's a real bummer, so good wishes for the recovery.
Our group has suffered a couple of injuries last week, one was a combined broken leg and a dislocated knee. The other was a broken collarbone. Both on lower slopes, both highly experienced skiers. I am trying to keep my OH on the steeps.
We all wish you well from here.

Ouch L!! Full sympathy for you...
Often fractures and dislocations of the elbow do result in you not getting full extension back but in all honesty you will not notice as you will find you can't straighten the arm out fully. You are likely still to have 98% extension. Think its a situation of head down and do as your told by the Drs to get a full and quick recovery.
