Lots of rental shops about. I've had good, bad and utterly awful when trialling kit. Avoid Sport 2000 shops!
Snell have been about for a long time, as have Sanglard, and I've had decent kit from Cham Sport down by the Sports Centre.
Lots of info and links here....

I've had experience with pre-booking skis. When I rented again, I was prepared to wait and see the range and standard of the equipment before parting with my money. I know it costs more, but some shops (not just in cham) do try and rent out some awful tat, and I wanted to be able to walk out the door.
The worst pre booked rental I had was from Sport 2000 in Chamonix Sud. A pair of Rossi B2L, the prep was so bad they did my head in after a day on Grand Montets.

Oh another quick question is there any ski rental shops around, if so do you know the names of them I'd like to have a browse of what skis they got to offer, I'm liking the feel of the slight fatter and more of a rocker from a ski.

Been looking at a few of the links and none them actually show what types of skis they have up for rent - instead just the name of the package, bronze. silver, gold etc...Presumably they have a range of twin tip/freestyle ski's ?

Yeah id never, ever pre-book my ski's online, and as you said although its more money its totally worth actually seeing the ski's before you hand the money over.

I think it is worth remembering guy's that If you settle for rubbish equipment then the shops will quite happily palm you off with poor quality skis or boots.
