Skiing: the art of catching cold and going broke while rapidly heading nowhere at great personal risk.

Tony - many thanks for the SC tip - would i be right in thinking basing myself on Chantemerle would be best for me and the types of pistes i am looking for?

I'd avoid Chantmerle and head for either Monetier or Villeneuve, for a much more authentic and traditional feel to the village. Chantmerle is more purpose built and uglier. Great selection of skiing accessible from all areas to be honest.

Mel if it is tree lined skiing you want then you will be disappointed with Valmorel as 90% of it is above the tree line but there are some lovely runs. We really did have a good week of skiing. also there is a run (the madelaine i think)where there is a drop off either side but it is not too hairy, although i was a bit paranoid with the kids and by the end of the week when it was quite icy, i was too frightened to take the kids down it in case they went over the side lol but i am sure there was another run that joined you back in the same place. also we had a terribel experience with crystal as you can see from my report. We havnt chose where to go next year. i have been somewhat put off france as it was sooooo expensive in valmorel and would really like some tree lined skiing. i am thinking for next year we might just get a last minute booking but dont know how many last minute bookings you can get for 2 adults and 2 children and in fact jack is 12 this year so he will be classed as an adult. we might have to get 2 rooms and see what bargains we can grab (will be taking the kids out of school for the week - lets call it educational lol)

I agree with Tony H. Serre Che every time...Lovely long blues, easy greens and some nice gentle reds if you want to tax yourself. 70% of the resort is in the tree line and as long as you do not go to late in the season you can usually ski right back to the villages.

Hi,
I haven't skied in many resorts, but the first place I skied after a gap of about 30 years was Zell am See in Austria. I thought it was really great for me, a nervous beginner/lower intermediate. The runs are tree-lined, wide, gentle and really easy for their grading - so that a red would have been no more than a hard blue in the other resorts I've been to since. And the views of the lake from up the mountain are fantastic.

And, it's only an hour from Salzburg airport.

We stayed in the Heitzmann hotel and had the best food I have ever had in my life. We still talk about those meals, 6 years later!

It is linked to the glacier resort of Kaprun so snow is guaranteed, although the queues for buses and gondolas etc. are also likely to be very long if the snow is bad in Zell.

Edit
I forgot to say that the mountain restaurants in Zell were amazing - log cabins with roaring fires serving excellent home made food on wooden platters. Whereas, the French mountain restaurants that we have been in have been more like plasticated self-service motorway cafes.

Lets hope its still the same as you describe Ally as I & the BTSC are going there on the 5 March.
Hopefully my doctor is wrong about me not being able to ski again after damaging my ligaments skiing in Engelberg this year, got the MRI scan tomorrow, been waiting just over 4 months for this,so fingers crossed, cant imagine not being able to ski ever again.

Hi Brooksy,
I hope the news is good. Like you, I can't imagine ever being unable to ski again. Please let us know what happens.
