It is not necessary to pay for the issue of an EHIC. The application can be made online through the NHS, here...

Thanks, Bandit, I've just applied online and, who knows, I might even get it before Saturday.

Thanks Bandit,
That was an excellent site and it had this to say:

Why do I need an EHIC if I have travel insurance?
The EHIC and holiday insurance are complementary and you are advised to have both. The EHIC does not cover some costs such as repatriation. Some insurance companies require you to have an EHIC and some companies will waive the excess charge if an EHIC has been used.

Should you require to been seen by a doctor, you will be asked for your EHIC. This will be used to create a medical record on the computer system.

The EHIC will cover you for medical services that members of the country that you are visiting normally receive.

Everyone should carry their EHIC in their wallet, along with your ski insurance card/details and the telephone number of the lift company in the area that you are visiting.

Well, I crossed my fingers that they would come in time and they have - 2 x EHIC arrived Friday morning, three days after applying and we now fly out in less than four hours!!!!
