Snow canons? Is that a new branch the Church of England has set up to help out during the current bad weather?

Snow cannons, of course, are a different thing - and Alpe D'Huez has lots that are well used in March and April. I went there during a mild spell in March and the grooming was excellent, no closures or bare patches.

Learn to carve, and you'll love the icy spring mornings.

You can see in the photo that there's hardly a wisp of snow, it's so hard

Or move to the Midwest and you'll have to learn to love them

First time I skied was in Romania and they had the cannons pumping all morning. It was like skiing through hail. Not nice for kids. That was Romania though . . .

We almost always go skiing in April - (to France - we drive)

We've always had plenty of snow, the slopes will be quieter than other school holidays and it's warmer than this time of year too.

Hopefully snow cannons won't be needed as there's usually enough to get through to the end of the season.

It can get a bit porridge like towards the end of the day on busier slopes, but it's never put us off.

Icy snow is scary for me. But I think snow like porridge worse in way as there is more of a risk of the ski getting caught and twisting the leg or body dangerously if it does lead to a fall. Whereas on ice you are more likely to skid over the surface in a straight line.

On ice I tend to fall feet first. On 'porridge' I fall head or upper body first. Not great.

Resorts vary a lot in altitude and hence temperature. So maybe it makes sense to go to a lower resort in early winter to avoid too much ice, and a higher resort in spring to avoid the slush. But that is not relevant to the question about cannons.
