the 23.5 is most likely the correct size but the foot needs to be stabilized in the boot to stop it from elongating and the toes hitting the end, rental boots tend to be high volume and this is probably what allows your foot to slide forward making it appear too small
unless you are looking for a very high performance boot then the krypton storm is proably the ideal model of the range..but as always without seeing your foot ???????

Maybe you just went to the 'wrong' shop?! What could they do in 4 weeks that they couldn't do in a couple of days?
Didn't have the right tools - was waiting for them to be delivered - never happened!

I have long really skinny feet with no instep whatsoever! Bit freaky! Does anybody think I will get ski boots which I find comfortable? I have been referred to an orthotist who took moulds of my feet and said I was an interesting case! Great! I am getting some sort of custom made insoles, apparently as I have now hit 40 I will get knee pain, hip pain and back pain if my feet aren't corrected now! But I really want my own ski boots!

I also have long skinny feet. One foot is slightly wider than the other. I have very little arch, and I think my feet are quite flat all over. CEM has found me a boot to fit. He makes my footbeds for d2d walking as well, so it's straightforward for him to make a ski boot footbed with the same points of support. There were only a couple of boots available from the 38 models he stocks, that fitted me, and even then, the standard liner was like wearing wellies. He fixed that with a Zipfit liner :D

Thanks Trencher but 2 pairs of boots is not an option, not for 7 days holiday a year, and airline charges for carriage as they are! I had thought of the Full Tilt boots, but never tried one on, although I know some models are narrow, and perhaps the 3 different parts they are contructed in might help with the upright stance, but I know nothing about how these boots feel.

Three return visits, and leaving the boots at the shop for alterations for 4 weeks didn't solve the problem - sometimes the boot really doesn't fit!

Yep, sounds to me like you need to go to a boot fitter with a decent reputation instead of someone waiting for the right tools to be delivered.
