Tony's list is worth looking into. In that list I've experience of Les Arcs and Obergurgl both of which I'd highly recommend for you. The latter is very expensive but, if you're going outside of school holidays, you may find somewhere within your budget. In Les Arcs I'd head for 2000, cheaper than 1950 but fantastic slopes for beginners. I've been to Alpe D'huez too but it was a very bad holiday for many reasons so my vision is blurred.
In your position, and knowing what I do now, I'd agree with Tony and look at Obergurgl, Les Arcs, Cervinia and Saas Fee. All major resorts (Obergurgl less so) so if you fancy something a little more off the beaten track these might not suit your taste. Niederau is worth a look too, very good beginner slopes.
Skiing or boarding is the big question :P

Passo Tonnale in Italy might be worth a look as a first time. Nr Airports and good nightlife with good beginners slopes and progression.
But for me its got to be Soldeu for beginners.

Soldeu is nowhere near a 2 hour transfer (assuming you are talking Barcelona/Toulouse).
