Why do you need to drive to Folkestone in the rush hour?

Perhaps they like car spotting 8)

Wickers, I'm putting you in for an early nomination for J2skier, funny person of the year award. NellyPS was in close order, but the new Avator is putting me off my AllBran.

Last year, this award went to TonyH, with his~
ACHTUNG! HUN ALERT. ~( Ithink someone was suggesting skiing in Germany)

GYPPO WARNING!! (The poor OP had indicated he might stay in a caravan in a ski resort!)

And the classic~ One saturday evening all regular J2skiers were watching in a state of some amusement as Ise and Bandit bickered about some miniscule piece of Swiss nothingness. The arguement was esculatng wildly, when a TonyH message appeared~"Do you two want to get a room?!"

Timing is everything. Last year, RossF was in the running but he seems to have headed north.

Some of these lines have been shamelessly stolen by other J2skiers, including meself.

Any other nominations?
Admin, who is on the dryside of dry, and close relatives are, of course, barred from entering.

I wouldn't try getting a ferry during the winter months - but that's just me.

A couple of years ago I took my younger daughter and some friends over to Ireland for the weekend, for her birthday party. It blew about force 10, and they cancelled the fast cat and we had to go on the slow ferry, and I felt horribly ill. It was just the same on the way back. I thought I was going to die. And it wasn't just me. I was surrounded by *** and the toilets were truly disgusting.

If it was me, I'd head for the tunnel every time.

I stayed in Val Cenis last March last min with snow coach and it was possibly one of the best weeks i have ever had. Wonderfull hotel good food empty slopes and fresh snow up to our knees twice during the week.

Not the most challenging of resorts but some plesant varied runs on uncrowded pistes.

I think th whole week including lift pass was only £450 Bargin.

As for ferries i made 9 crossings Dover to Calais last season and apart from the cue at calais coming back half term it was wonderfull.

Bongo wrote:The idea was to pick the kids up from school and go - this would mean we would be travelling in rush hour. Now not so sure what to do. Wanted to arrive in Val Cenis at 4pm on Saturday and can't take kids out of school (have already allocated the 2 weeks - naughty I know but skiing just wouldn't happen in the hols this year and the other week is a once in a lifetime opportunity). I suppose we could set out later for the tunnel or just get the overnight ferry from Portsmouth. Help!!!!

When driving abroad I usually take the tunnel for speed. The road links from Northern France into the Alps are excellent. I dont know about from Caen, but it would mean having to either go north of Paris and througb Rouen, or going very close to Paris I imagine, both of which are best avoided!
As for this side, the drive from Pompey to Folkestone is bad enough at the best of times, let alone in rush hour. Personally, I'd sit down with a road map of Europe and look into the longer local crossing. It can be rough on the channel any time of the year, look at last week for example, so dont worry about it being any worse than normal. I have sailed in force 8's in July and on a millpond in December.
Best of luck.

I'd rather drive north to south through London than through Rouen. Avoid it like the plague, it's a nightmare
