I appreciate that waiting is a good idea if you are young single and can just watch for the right conditions and price etc, but not when you are a family with kids , there are more issues to take into consideration .

True, although it depends on whether you are prepared to take your kids out of school, which I guess depends on their age.

Thats what I have done for years. And if a better deal comes up, I change the week.Pablo Escobar wrote:I am not saying decide the day before you go 'when' you are going. Book a week off and then book a holiday for that week closer to the time.

Ive the same problem. We have 3 kids and they will be all classed as adults,14yrs and over and we would love HB or catered Chalet. Were looking at Jan 2nd so they will only miss 3 days of school and Im sure not to much is done in the 3 days anyway. We also have exams to think of.
Ive set a date and am going to see what prices are like for early deals then make my mind up then. My heart says wait nearer to Chrimbo but my heed says book now. Not got alot of cash tbh so I may have to wait anyway.
Got £3000 what would you do?

3000 pounds is a lot of money !!
Our apartments with 2 bedrooms would cost you around 125 Euro per night x 7 an estate car for 8 days pick up airport is éuro 255 so far 1130 Euro
This year flights straight after the new year were peanuts, I cant say that it will be the same, but based on the last 6 years of business in Austria , it is more probable than not that you will find cheap flights. This year my sons paid about 60 pounds return .
Last night I went out to dinner in a 4 star hotel, the buffet was Euro 13.50 per person. Next door to our apartments you can get a 3 course daily special menu for between 12 and 14 Euro , if you calculated 100 Euro per night with a drink etc that is very realistic. So if you managed flights for pounds 750 for 5 of you, plus meals out every night plus a car rental and accommodation you are still having about 500 pounds spare towards the lift passes.Obviously if you want to save money you can mix eating in with going out, travel to and from the airport on the train 28 éuro each way for 5 of you. It can be as cheap or as expensive as you want to make it. After New year I am happy to take a booking that is not arriving on a Saturday, which is usually the most expensive day to travel.
This Christmas 3 of our guest families drove from the UK, This week ( half term ) one family flew to Stuttgart, OK 4 hour drive but they paid 29 pounds each for the flight, so it made a half term holiday affordable. There are many ways and means to do it cheaper than a tour op package. If you need help or info please get in touch. Just one point to mention March in our village the kids would get free lift passes. Best of luck.
