I can honestly say that in the 5 visits I have made to Mayrhofen, the only time I queued for going up the Penken Gondola was on 30th December 2008, and we arrived at 9.30am in the queue.

I normally head up it between 8.15 and 8.45am and its fine, maybe a 3 or 4 minute wait but never more than that.

Its an idea to consider the bus to either Finkenburg as suggested, or Hippach and take the Horberg Gondola up from there which connects into the back of Penken in the bowl under Horbergjoch.

If you get up early enough, not only should you avoid any queuing, but you will be lucky enough to ski red 1 and 11 before anyone but the instructors have.

Enjoy.

Definately get there early during half term. We were there last year and it was so busy from as early as 8.30 they closed the gondola on 2 mornings that we knew about for a couple of hours. It's a bit of a free for all and if you have kids you have to keep a very tight hold to keep together.

Good skiing when you get up there though :-)

That, along with the ridiculously inflated prices, is why I have never been anywhere at Feb half term.

Yup - me too.

Watch out for the 'corner' on the way up the Penken gondola - throws a lot of people off balance - kept me amused every Sunday for weeks

Ah yes, I forget about that. You become accustomed to it when you have been before, but a lot of people get quite upset about it!!!
I actually had one trip up with a woman who screamed at the corner!!!!
