Austrian food is fantastic and varied.
Restaurants will be open for Xmas Eve which is their big one, and Xmas day which is ours. However, you will need to book somewhere the day you arrive, or better still do some research on the resort, find somewhere that sounds perfect, and prebook online or on the phone.
You will be lucky to get anywhere if you are not careful.
My first ski trip was Xmas in VT and there was only 1 place that had any tables left for Xmas night, but fortunately that turned out to be fantastic anyway.
Good luck and enjoy.

Hi dianep, As mentioned its best to book a table in advance if your going to eat out, Dont leave it to chance especially at Christmas. We stayed in the Hotel Orgler and their food was fantastic.

Over the years i have had many Austrian Christmas dinners and they have all been scrumptious. Trout,Carp,Pork and Duck to name a few have been served up with all the usual roast veg.

Why not give the kids two Christmas`s one Austrian and one British when you get home, I`m sure the kids would approve. What ever you choose to do i hope you enjoy.

Can't help with advice on Christmas dinner, though I would certainly want to try the authentic Austrian version if its available. While I can understand your desire to have a traditional Christmas day for the sake of the kids, I would personally hate to give up the days skiing and wonder is there something special that you could do to keep skiing while still making it a special day, e.g. everybody skis in Santa hats (maybe one of the dads in full Santa outfit!), arrange a special meal on the mountain, get Santa to bring up a sack of presents to be opened at lunchtime (1 per child), etc. I also liked the suggestion of having "Christmas Day" when you get back.

I did, however, have a fantastic News Years Eve dinner a number of years ago (in Zell am Zee). The hotel actually served 10 courses of beautiful food spread out over several hours. We were entertained by a live band that played just about everything - plenty of pop, some traditional Austrian music and a Strauss medley at the stroke of midnight. Great to dance to! At midnight, there was an amazing fireworks display outside which reflected off the mountain - spectacular. By the time we had toasted in the New Year in about 4 different times zones - it seemed like a good idea at the time  - we were very happy, if somewhat "tired and emotional" :shock Skiing the next day was a bit of a challenge

Having been skiing twice over Xmas, I have to say we treated Xmas Day as a normal skiing day. You dont want to go on a skiing holiday and miss a days skiing, do you Skidaddle?
It was a little odd the first time, realising at the top of the Cime de Caron that it was 25th December whilst looking right across the Alps.
The last Xmas Day I skied was about my worst day on skis, and I was still shaking over dinner than night.

Collision, long slide, bang to head, lucky shes in a helmet...

I was wobbling like a jelly, and didnt ski the rest of the day as I was feeling quite sick, and I was totally unhurt luckily.
