i think because it's xmas - it would need to have a reasonable priced accommodation that allowed you to get a lot for your money. so rekcon Klosters and St Moritz are out.

Possibly somewhere that would be good at new year too. the xmas week next season is SHOCKING! you leave on boxing day. Boo!

Zermatt looks awesome - somewhere like that but a wee bitty cheaper. I think for pure xmas pleasure - somewhere with plenty pretty shops to look round - good bars and places to having huge steaming mugs of cocoa, sleigh rides, ice rinks..

Yes i did come across saas fe on my travels. going to look into that in more detail

In March 07 we stayed in Nendaz for a week. Its just next to Verbier so has all the runs, snow and accessability of Verbier at a fraction of the price. The area around it had quite a lot of smaller towns with good skiing.

I did Verbier but not for Xmas. Its fine if you are in a chalet, as you wont have to sit and watch the posho's getting into their bottles of Champers over dinner and spending obscene amounts of money.
I booked it last minute and it was one of the cheapest ski holidays I have ever had. Unlikely that you will get something for Xmas however.

Klosters and Davos arent THAT expensive.

Samnaun might be quite good if you can find somewhere to stay, linked to Ischgl in Austria and it's duty free.

Whilst I wouldn't call Verbier a 'chocolate box' resort it is definitely not full of rich russians. I think whoever told you this is either getting confused with somewhere else or they spent their entire time in Verbier in one small night club. )
Verbier does not have the variety of upmarket hotels (surprising given its reputation but true nevertheless) that rich Russians seem to like.

I think its Courchevel thats full of the nouveau riche Ruskies. Verbier is like being in Lightwater or Basingstoke. But nicer.

hmmm...coming from a city as beautiful as Edinburgh - the thought of being somewhere akin to "Basingstoke" chills me.

LOL

Zermatt then?

I was in Zermatt last month. The centre always seems like a town to me. The prices in the restaurants are pretty steep, but...it does have a very memorable backdrop!

My hotel let me down with picking me up from the station, and told me to get a taxi. It was 550 metres and cost 12 Sfr.

I walked back when I left to go back home.
