Was it a new shape Range Rover? You owe yourself an apology for buying a Frreelander, and all the neighbours as they have to look at the thing!!

Good mileage from a 3.2..

That's a lot different from times past, maybe you don't appreciate what it used to be like

RossF, surely that's just a skin deep appraisal. Rather like a kilt, its what's under the bonnet that counts!

Range Rover was a P38.

Didn't mean to sound old geezerish, But that never used to happen. Crude prices would drop, but the price of petrol never followed by similar amount.

Recently sold my old 4.6 liter Range Rover, £2k/yr average maintenance cost, 15mpg. My first tankful cost £82.00 :(

Carbon footprint, don't even go there.

So, bought a 6 month old 3.2 litre Freelander. Course it has all the up to date whizmos, ejector seats, headlights that point to the right, when you cross the channel ferry, you get the picture. Totally over the top. It's better equipped than my house. At one point, I considered moving in!

The one feature, that captures my Lancashire/Scottish soul is the MPG readout. So, we go on a 500 mile journey, I'm on cruise control steady 58 miles per hour, light toe touch, cruising up to junctions, five mile queue behind me. At the end of my stint, it's reading 30.1mpg. Result! Then my frau takes over, and I grab some ski-dream sleep. Waking at the journey end, double shock// horror ~~ 22mpg!!

"Don't say anything", says she, who must be obeyed at all times, chucking the car keys over, "You drive like an old man"

Oh its you at the front of that queue I am working my way through is it?

My Leon FR tdi will return an average of 48mpg if I drive it with cushions on the back shelf and with a flat cap on (well, 75mph on the motorways anyway, slow enough...) and thats not bad for a 2 litre diesel with 170 bhp. If I drive it without any thought and just enjoy the drive, I am however lucky to get 40mpg out of it on average.

The annoying thing is the price difference between petrol and diesel. I have always had diesel cars as they are cheaper to run, maintain, etc, but the cost of diesel is still ridiculously higher than petrol, and the manufacturing process is actually less involved. Is this just another way of our Government fleecing those that like to be more considerate for the environment and more cost conscious?

I am still paying around £1.15 for a litre of diesel whilst the petrol heads talk about a litre for under a £1.

grrrrrrr
