It's funny, Serre Chevalier may be kind of perfect because it's such a low resort compared to those in the Northern French Alps (no bloody noses or dizziness like at Courchevel, possibly) etc., but it's considered pretty 'snow-sure', (no icy / grassy runs like at Meribel just after mid season).

But then again, I went 5th January 2008, the first of 2 visits to Serre Ch., and the snow was good, deep snow even (well mostly) at the lowest resort town level, Briancon. But last year I was deciding between S.Ch. and Zell, and I noticed in the snow reports, as early as late December, Zell had noticably more snow than the snow sure Serre Chevalier. I was wary about going to the French resort days after New Year, where I'd already bought flights and accommodation, until I got onto the fresh powder topped mountains and also appreciated the couple of feet of snow on my balcony in low Briancon. There must have been a lot of snow at Zell am See. (edited)

We skied the whole of Zell am See in late November last year - fantastic conditions. Just hoping we strike it as lucky this weekend.

This year we only got to ski Kaprun as Zell didn't open till the week after as the 'big' snow and low temperatures only arrived while we were there.

I alwasy enjoy my pre-season ski at kaprun, it's not the most exciting but it does get the legs in tune for the season even if it is very cold. If Zell is open it's much better as more variety and a wee bit warmer, but I think we just got lucky last year with very good early season conditions and they opened early, I don't think it's usually scheduled to open till about last week nov/1st week Dec.

Next year we are thjnking of having a change and heading for Hintertux as we keep hearing good things.

Have you been to Hintertux in winter, yet?

I'd been kind of pencilling it in for future spring / summer skiing some time, in the next few years. But I think I'll try Alpe D'Huez first for that.

And I'm thinking of trying Hintertux for earlyish Winter skiing - 17th Dec. or so, if it's likely to be snow sure.
