I bought my first board(palmer honeycircle) on my second year.As said earlier you have to pay about £20 air carridge £30 to £40 for a decent service,it all mounts up.Saying that I can look down my first run of the season and rip it to shreds knowing exactly how my board will react.Once you nail boots, board and bindings and they work as one you will have ride of your life(wife excluded). You need to know what you want from the board first ie freeride, park etc, just don't buy because of graphics or because it's expensive and supposed to go like a rocket, other wise you will never progress.

If you're going 3 times a year, that's around €270 of rentals a year for a top board, depending on where you go, and you're getting a top end board each time.
Buying your own you need to pay for carriage, so €30ish a go, €90 a season. You've got to think if you buy a board how long would you keep it, multiply that by €180 (Rental - carriage), and that's how much you should spend on a board.
Hope this helps

Get 3 mates, take the car, no more surcharges for the equipment and it works out cheaper than flying.

Personally I have my own skis but im lucky enough to be able to buy them at fraction of the retail price.
If i ever had to buy at shop prices I think i would rent in future.
With the cost of carriage nowdays its cheaper to hire a pair / Board and you get to try the latest gear or even a few different makes.
Most major resorts these days also have a high standard of equipment.

If you did some homework before you went, depending on where you go, you might find somewhere that you can try before you buy.
My hubby did this a few years ago in Val D'Isere, spent a couple of days trying out various skis and bought his favourite pair and then squeezed them in with his old skis on the way home which he then flogged on ebay.
