Had to days in January this year where the day time high was below 30-jus' sayin'. Usually there is about a week where this is the case.

Maybe I've been lucky!

Was this the same week when it hit -41 overnight? I think it was a record for Banff.

Did you ski in -30?

In January it has been -51.2... in all fairness not since the 50's but -41 was by no mean a record. -30 is easily skiable in as long as it is not windy, just not great to be standing around in your boots and snow really starts to slow down. Only 2 days I have been in Banff when the lifts have not turned due to it being too cold (below -40, reported -50 at the top of Lake Louise).

I stand corrected, Jan 25 1950. They made quite a fuss in the newspaper for the -41 event though.

Ross... you really, really like skiing!

I think the coldest for me has been about -25C. I can relate to your observation about the snow slowing down. I remember comming down wildfire in fresh powder. It felt like skiing on sand. It's a freeky feeling.

Have you been to Banff a whole lot? -35 there feels like a Scottish -10!!! It is a "dry" cold so it does not effect me a whole bunch. I think skiing day in day out for 3 months in the Rockies builds up your tolerance to the cold on your face.. after the first couple weeks I left my face unprotected (apart from suncream).

True, it's a 'dry' cold. I've been as cold in London in the mist. But -30 is -30. That's chilly. :-)

Quick thanks to Steveandomno (blimey, that is a tough word to type) for the advice. A colleague is staying at the Banff Park Lodge so makes sense to book Xmas dinner there. Plan to take in Kicking Horse for a day and will stop off at Num-ti-jah Lodge.

Using up nearly 19 years worth of airmiles to take the family and then BA announce a a half-price airmils deal and reduced surcharge. None of which apply if you have already booked . But not going to dwell on it and spoil the enjoyment. Just over 2 weeks to go! Getting very excited :D. Ta Mark

Kicking Horse is great. Lunch at the Eagle eye restaurant is surprisingly good value for money with a great view. If you are looking for a bit of dinner on the way home, I recommend the new Whitetooth grill in the centre of town.

Also, having an SUV, Panorama is managable as a day trip from Banff.

We will be at sunshine on 28th Dec. Can't wait. Have fun.
PM me if you have more specific questions.
