People dont seem to be able to detect sarcasm on forums.

Admin - can we dedicate one of the smilies to sarcasm from now on

:hunf: would probably serve the purpose.

Admin wrote:Firstly, don't get yourself in a position where you're paying for other people on a promise - either they pay up front, on time, or they don't go - simple - so no need for insurance.

Also, be very wary of identifying yourself as a "Group Leader". However unlikely, a serious incident on the mountain (e.g. an off-piste accident) could see you being held responsible if you're identifiable as a leader.

I feel like I'm a bit of an expert on this subject....

Point one - Mr admin is absolutely right. In this day and age there is absolutely no need to pay for everyone, you can all pay separately online.

Point two - I'm not so sure... There's no avoiding being called a group leader, when you book for a group you are immediately labelled. It's unavoidable.

I booked a holiday last year for 27 people. One person cancelled (having split up with her husband) and one person was replaced by another (having become the other woman). It was a logistical nightmare but there was no point at which I thought I would've been liable. They had to lose their deposit and pay another third of the cost and they did. Maybe it's because these people were my friends? I wouldn't organise a holiday for people that I couldn't trust.

My philosphy is don't worry about something that hasn't happened yet.

Best of luck to you. I feel your pain!
xx

Sometimes semantics are very important. In that position I would use the term "group coordinator". Coordinator implies a lot less responsiblity than leader or even organiser, but still makes you the reference point for the group. Who knows, even that might be fraught with legal risk.

Three summers ago, getting on a bus in Pisa, an American chap threw his child trolley on board, whacking my OH on the head, and producing a muckle bruise. Getting off the bus, I mildly suggested he was ignorant, and an Ar..h..e, to boot. He proceeded to whack me across the head.

Off the bus, I lowered my rucsac to the ground, and mild mannered man that I am, leaned back on to the bus, grabbed him by the Gho....s, twisted, and pulled, whereupon, he shot over my shoulder, complete with ripped jeans, at the appropriate area, and landed on his feet. Given that he was less than half my age, I did think there might be some ensuing action, but none there was.

Brought a whole new meaning to the word "Yank"

I organise group holidays with friends every year, pay on my visa, and don't seem to have any bother.

On behalf of my disrespectable countryman I am sorry
