Too fast or no control?

It's one of those movements that is not always intuitive. If you are in the back seat, your skis have got in front of you (or at least in front of the mass of your body). The normal reaction might be to try to lean foreward. However as the mass of your legs is less than the mass of your body, all that will happen is that your skis (and legs) will get further in front of you as you bend at the hips and waist.
This normally happens in a turn (immediately after transition) and with good modern technique, your inside ski will be ahead of your outside ski. Allow the ski that is trailing to fall even further behind until it is under you and in a position you can use to correct your balance.

Seeking out a well fitting helmet will help to keep your brains in the right place :D
Taking some lessons will help to ensure that you gain skills and don't find yourself headbutting the slope too often :D

Thats' great. while I'm in the comfort of my own little resort I'll have to try pulling myself out of it. What ever will prevent me from splattering my brains on the snow at a high rate of speed is cool with me

It's another aspect of skiing that inline skating will help with. If you get in the back seat on inline skates, then you are on your seat in an instant.
