Hi Barron,
I would recommend to go to Soelden. On top of ski area in the town, there are two glaciers there with quite easy slopes - very good for the beginners. As far as apre-ski life is concerned, I think there is no better place in Austria :D .
In Italy, I prefer Val Gardena - actually any place there - Ortisei, Wolkenstein or Santa-Christina. You can find over 1200 km of slopes - again for the beginners as well as more advanced skiers. Night life also cool.
No matter what you finally will choose - I wish you already a lot of fun :D .
Cheers,
Magda

Overbearing? Sorry, but if we are talking rot, you have just done it. Its hardly in your face - a great selection of bars and restaraunts, and if you want a club of late beer, you can find one, but its hardly in your face. The Ice Bar gets lively between 4 and 7 but its easy to just walk past it and find somewhere of your choice.
I stopped in Schwendau last year, and it was too quiet, just the hotel bar to go to, so I can only imagine that you like to be tucked in bed at 9 or playing scrabble in the lounge......;-)
Oh, and for the record, while last year was pretty crap all over Europe, it didnt stop every run on the Penken being open, both at Xmas and in mid Feb. Whereas Niederau was struggling to open the majority of its runs - hence why all the last minute deals were for there at knock down prices.
maybe I'm just getting old then
oh and it's drafts, not scrabble :D
diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks
Maybe you are....
Not being a BORED game type of person, I wouldnt know what is en vogue this season, but frankly I'd rather poke myself in the eye with a spoon than resort to either of those 2 options.
And yes, you are right. Each to his own. Now fetch me a pint of Zillertaller......
or Edelweiss.................... )

I do agree that Mayrhofen is a great resort although it can be a little overbearing if you don't want the 'in your face' routine. It would be very worthwhile staying in one of the smaller villages outside of the town such as Lanersbach or Finkenberg, quiet at night but close enough to hop in a cab for a rowdy night out
