Well i understand what you guys are saying about the poles but i was thinking of the biomex support because for what i understand the support is on the top side of your hand to help limit hyerextending the wrist. Also i liked this style because the wrist guards are removable so if they do become annoying she can remove them and just use the gloves. She needs new gloves anyways because when she hurt her wrist they had to cut her glove off so even if they dont work then she can just use the glove. Does anybody have any other ideas about protective gear. I heard of skiers wearing knee braces such as what volleyball players wear. Does anybody recommend any kind of knee support.

I think the only skiers who routinely wear some types of knee support are telemarkers with the obvious exception of anyone with existing injuries of course.

I'm a bit dubious about the whole thing to be honest, there's a high incidence of wrist injuries for beginner snowboarders measured around the world so it's prudent to take some precaution, likewise there's some uncomfortable mild injuries that beginner 'boarders commonly suffer from that are preventable with some padding.

I'd probably try and focus in on the instruction and forget the protection, it sounds like your GF might have a confidence problem after that fall so a private instructor might work well?

Without wanting to get back into that whole skiing vs snowboarding thing, I think generaly snowboarders at the early stages of mastering their pursuit, tend to spend more time 'getting back up again' than similar level skiers. Also falling off skis is usually more of a rolling action where as snowboarders (from what I've seen) tend to hit the ground quite hard, either forward or backwards, with their wrists taking much of the load.

Other than a helmet I personally think you would be better off spending the money on private lessons.

well all that sounds good. Shes gonna do a private lesson i just wanted to ask some questions and see what experienced skiers thought, since i have never gone skiing before i had no idea what would be helpful. I think im gonna look into some simple wrist guards since her wrist isnt real strong yet it might be a good thing to have. Well hopefully she wont be to nervous about breaking her wrist again and be able to enjoy skiing. Thanks

Heck yeah Mike, I wear two Donjoy braces and I love em to death. My knees don't torque in them thus making me happy. Hope you girl has a good time! What in the sam's hill are Impact Shorts?

Basically - padded knickers :D

I can't see padding being anything other than cumbersome when learning to ski - great for boarding, and freestyle skiing but otherwise it is really down to personal preference. If she thinks she needs it, she likely does, otherwise she will be so afraid she won't learn anything.

:) hi,the most common injury when skiing is a sprained or broken thumb, this is caused when the skier falls forward and outs thier hands out to stop thier fall and as the hand is usually through the wrist strap so when hitting the ground the thumb is on one side of the pole and the other four fingures are on the other. so while your girlfriend is getting use to skiing if she avoids putting her hands through the wrist straps to begin with she should be fine ( but when polling along must make sure she keeps a good hold of it otherwise it can be left behind.hope this is of use and hope yo both have a plesent ,enjoyable trouble free trip.

I think an important thing is to learn how to fall properly.

Sticking your hands out is a pretty good way of snapping something.

Learning breakfalls as used in Judo, Wrestling, Ju Jitsu etc will certainly help you fall in a way that will minimise chances of injury. Also will gives you more confidence in the event of a fall.
