I've read in other forums that you should definately NOT use your own skis on dry slopes because the friction will basically disintergrate the ski bases regardless of what wax you use. The dry ski slope in Southampton hires skis for less than £2 an hour.

My understanding is the same as 'I love skiing'. It is definitely a daft idea to use your own skis on dry slopes.

Many people who ski and board the whole season have what they call thier "rock board or skis". At the start and end of the season when the snow cover isn't good, the rock skis come out. These skis are generally old ones that would otherwise have been sold on.

Unless conditions are very bad, I don't use rock boards or skis, beause they have generally been replaced for a reason - they don't perform as well. Unless the rental skis at dry slopes are high performance, I would have thought it worth owning a good pair of skis for just this purpose. At least if you go often enough to justify the cost.

Just how fast do ski bases wear out on dry slopes ?

i would have thought it depended on the prevailing weather conditions at the time, if you're contemplating going onto the dry slope in the middle of the summer you'd have to be either mad or rich to take your own skis on, however in the middle of winter when the temperature is much lower i can't see it doing that much harm providing the skis are treated well in between sessions?
I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

Dry slope - The ultimate ski base 'structuring'! What is it, warm weather, deep groves? Pavel would be proud!

Trencher, Using so-called 'rock ski/board' is like wearing old sneakers/trainers for washing the car, use them if you have them otherwise use hire skis.
