I've got a trip booked to Mayrhofen in January and I reckon there's points to be had for breaking my black run duck on Austria's steepest.

If you want to break your leg or neck, then this run is for you. If you want to break your duck, pick something a little less mental. If you fall on here, you will not get up until you hit the bottom. It is 78 degrees. I have seen several bad falls on here, ending up with a helicopter trip to hospital.

Seriously, Mayrhofen is a fabulous ski area, but some of the reds there are challenging enough. I havent skiid the H-K, neither has my mate who has been skiing for 30 years and knows Mayrhofen inside out.

Red 7 up the back of the Horberg is a fabulous run, and make sure you go up the 150 cable car and try some of the runs of the back fo Rastkogel. There is plenty of challenging and varied skiing on the Penken area, dont get hung up on doing a black, and if you do the H-K, you may live to regret it!!!!
 ellistine if you go for it, best of luck to ya.

If the unforutate happens I know a great chopper service....
Uh oh, I think I broke'd the lift

Ski'd on it last March (during "Austria's best week of the season") and it was fun. No-where near as crazy as I was expecting, but it is quite steep near the top.

I agree with you, I was in Mayerhofen for my second full week of snowboarding, and just sitting watching the H-K was scary!! However as half of it was mud and rock at the time, I don't suppose that helped.

There are some great reds on the Penken even, with the 3 and the 5 being particulary fast and wide. Unfortunately I ended up doing the black 4 by accident, as it was wrongly marked on an OLD map by the top of the Penken lift. It was 8.45 in the morning in April, there was no sun and it was sheet ice. As a beginner it was not the most fun I have had in my life.... maybe I'll try again in March after I have another couple of weeks under my belt.

I tried it and really hurt myself... started off well but one incy mistake is badly punished. If your prone to correcting mistakes, this is not the run for you.

It is a great ski area so my suggestion is try it on the last day, last run and make the most of your travel insurance and get a helecopter back !

Yeah, 3 reds (5 & 6 adn 1 i think + 2 blue) all interlink and is great fun with a really nice jump point at the end on the most central one.

Red 7 is the kiddie. Massive long and varied run. You need to take the Schneekaar chair right up to the top and then ski off the funny little hump at the top, where everyone congregates, and keep left, and just go for it. If you go right, you end up on that rather steep and mogely black.

Red 7 goes on and on, loads of wide open slopes near the top section, but beware if theres fresh snow up there, you cant see the big drops and bumps!
After that, it gets narrower and more difficult, with a couple of difficult corners, but a lovely mountain restaurant on the way down with stunning views, and its amazing up there at about 10.30am to have a short break.

Red 7 brings you back down to the bottom of where all the runs meet near where the Horberg Gondola comes up. Absolutely love Red 7.

Well?

I read elsewhere that Ellistine et al have returned so what was the outcome?

Chatting about it before hand is one thing now let's get the lowdown!

The day I ski'd with Ellistine (who is plenty good enough to have done the Harikiri) the conditions were not condusive to doing such a difficult run - flat light, lots of loose snow which was hard to see before you hit it etc. etc.

We did the right thing by not attempting it.
