I think it would be unfair of me to share it publicly as it is organised by a friend who lives locally and the hotel has a limited number of rooms; however, it is a family run "Pension" and I believe the arrangement is not uncommon at that time of year. We stay in the Mittersill area which is not far from Zell am See. I'm pretty sure you would find something similar without too much trouble. Bus / car ride to the lift - not in a ski resort as such.

We have been skiing 3 times in the 3 valleys for well under a grand. We've had to botch it together though, by that I mean booking flights, transport and accom individually. There are some good and bad points. The good is the price, as we haven't paid over £750 for everything (including food) but that also means we've self catered and took racks of meat from Costco in our bags.

Saying that, we have been there 3 times and done it 3 times, so we are clearly doing something right. We've been in catered chalets the last 4 years (not in the 3v) but if we do go back we would have no problem with not going through an agent again.

Hope this helps.

Steve.

Extra detail
Me and 3 other friends want to go on a skiing holiday in the next 1 or 2 years instated of the usual 'lads holiday'. The only problem is we were going to go with our school but I suggested going on our own would be more fun and possibly cheaper. However, I haven't been able to find anything for less than £1200, the same price as the school one. If anyone knows how to ski for under £1000 each either organised individually or through a companies that would be sick

Easy. My ski trips usually cost £1000 including all the above and food and drink as well.
£500-£600 main holiday catered board, £200 lift pass, £200 or so pocket money for drinks and snacks.

I have also taken a Club Med holiday for under £1000pp which is literally everything included, but that was a couple of years ago now and a special offer.

Yup, have to agree with Tony. Skiing cost us £1,000 every trip whether we do DIY or with an operator. It is just a matter of research to find the best deals. The most important part is to find the right priced accommodation, flights are pretty much constant

The strengthening UK/€ exchange rate, is likely to mean even better DIY overall costs c/w T/Os.The T/Os tend to fix their costs early, often tied to a rate from a year ago.
Flight costs. I use points to get free flights, but return easyjet flights to Munich are £82, lower than the past two years. Plus £30 baggage.
Transfer cost, (train/taxi), unchanged in Euro price for 5 years, but 10% lower in £ than 3 years ago. So now £64.
Accomodation, I pay €22/night, my share of an apartment, higher than this for my normal solo trip, since I take an apartment for myself. Add in some breakfast cost, this would be £170.
Dinners £70/week.
Lift pass £168

Total £584.00
That is not what I pay for a pass, since I always buy a large area season pass, either the AllStar or the Tirol, cost reduced by advanced purchase.

Even if you choose to go with a T/O, either buy your lift pass in resort, or on the transfer bus, after checking that you will get the local price. Hence Obergurgl is quoted at £226 in a brochure, but bought locally at today's exchange rate would cost £202.

Another benefit of DiY, is that you could travel on a Friday, and come back on on a Sunday, ie 8 days skiing rather than 6 days, reducing the cost/ski day. (In my case a week or two more)

Interesting thread; I've had trips to Austria and to Switzerland in the last two seasons that cost well under £1,000. Flew Swiss to Geneva and BA to Innsbruck (both worked out much cheaper than Easyjet), advanced tickets booked online for rail tranfers, accommodation booked through resort travel offices ('locals' prices). Doing this gives you the flexibility to travel midweek to midweek, avoiding the airport crushes at either end!

You should be fine with your budget pretty much everywhere. Just plan in advance. For 1000- 1500 pounds you can rent a 2 bedroom flat in the resort to share between the 4 of you and you will still have 2500-3000 pounds to pay for the rest.

We usually spend around £1,250 to £1.500 pp all in, whether peak or off peak (off peak means we go for higher star accommodation)
