Following on from what Pavel has said, I am now a big fan of the layer system.
My first jacket was insulated. In cold weather I was fine, but in warmer temps (say -2 to +4 ) I tended to overheat.
I now have a goretex shell jacket with no insulation, a high performance mid layer and a merino wool base layer. The mid layer will squash down and can easily fit into my backpack if I'm too warm. Therefore really flexible.
I've also found that this set up is less cramping when it comes to the movement of the torso/shoulders etc. I find this helps with my 360 backflips and rail switch ups. Sick...

Yep soft shells as you main jacket and a hard shell (can go cheap on this is my thought) for the odd wet day is way to go. Infinitely more breathable than any hard shell/gortex jacket. Reality is very small % of anyone's skiing time is done with heavy snow and rain (skiing in Norway or Whistler is exception).
90% days soft shell.
9 % days soft shell with hard shell over it.
1% soft shell + a duvet as freezing cold.

Love this idea of massaging your ski clobber ready for the new season!...that's what I call attention to detail. Unfortunately I find it enough of a chore getting myself physically fit for skiing..never mind my clothes.
