Last year, for example, when we went to Tignes, we were advised to fly into Geneva. The cheapest flights for this were around £100 return, increasing up to about £150 for certain flights including skis. And the public bus transfer (Altibus) was 106 euros return from Geneva to Tignes, but only 15 euros return from the station at Bourg St Maurice to Tignes. And the ski train (if you got the tickets early enough) was about £150 return and there's no extra charge for ski carriage or suitcases.
But if you decide to go on the train as part of a package holiday they usually charge you more, presumably because they can get more of a discount on flights than on the Eurostar.
I think the main disadvantage of the ski train is that it only goes from London, or Ashford, whereas with flights there are lots going from regional airports.

Thanks Andy - I forgot to mention that if you get the night train out on Friday night and back on Saturday night you can ski for 8 days :)
But it's not a sleeper, so you have to be someone who can sleep sitting up, and from experience I prefer to pay a bit more and get the larger more comfortable seats so that I can sleep.
There is a sleeper train, but it's a French train between Paris and the ski resort stations, so you have to get the Eurostar between London and Paris and then change trains. And you can't buy tickets for the French trains yet for the ski season. I went on the sleeper last year and found it very comfortable :)

Ian - in the past I have bought them even cheaper than that. If you're a member of the Ski Club of GB you get a discount, if you buy the tickets early enough.
When I wanted them for Feb half-term I used to get them the second they went on sale, and by lunch time they were usually all gone!
