This discussion came up a couple of years back, and I was one of those who thought not from experience but of reading reviews that the place was expensive, it is interesting to here that prices seem average for France.
It does look an interesting area maybe it could be back on the radar
Ps Not really too bothered about if it is posh, I will just sit and laugh at the Hoo-ray Henrys in action
Megeve? Love it or loathe it?

Yes I think that qualifies you for an opinion. I'm only going on what I've been told and what I've read, same as Ian. Norfolks flat in a lot of places by the way.
And no, you won't find me in chamonix, particularly in an English bar.
If Megeve is full of people like you, I've been right not to visit it -)
Top post, my a**e
Well, that's cleared up any mistaken association of snobbery with Megeve. Well done.

Hi Jadavi
I haven't stayed in Megeve itself, but have stayed in St. Gervais quite a few times and have frequently skied on the Megeve side of the valley. Personally, I love the area and you can quite easily reach St Gervais, Megeve, Combloux, La Giettaz and St.Nicholas de Veroce from any of these bases. If you have a car, you have lots more posibilities, including Les Contamines. This year we explored further afield and took the Tramway du Mont Blanc (just for the experience) to Les Houches, drove just beyond Megeve to Praz sur Arly and Notre Dame de Bellecombe and went through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Cormayeur - all very easy. We usually go over Christmas and New Year and it's still perfectly possible to have quiet slopes and no queues.
I consider myself to be a very budget conscious intermediate skier. We usually go self-catering and like many others, we take advantage of the many 'Hors Sac' indoor picnic areas if the weather isn't suitable to sit outside for a picnic lunch. The views of Mont Blanc are stunning, so we sit out whenever possible. If the area is considered to be expensive, it doesn't affect me -) It's beautiful, easy to get to and offers plenty of variety, both when skiing or in the evenings.
I don't care if people are 'posh' or not. I care more if they are obnoxious or rude and let's face it, you meet posh, obnoxious and rude in all walks of life and in most ski resorts. Last year I stood next to a very good looking young man on an escalator up to a telecabine in Megeve. He wore an immaculate long black leather jacket and had a pair of silver/chrome skis - probably Bogner or something (a tad too expensive for me). We decided he was a Russian oligarch, but that my Dare2b jacket and hire skis were far more practical for the conditions :D
Here is a link to my photo page on snow-forecast.com which gives you an idea of the area, although I haven't uploaded any of Megeve itself:- http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/SaintGervaisMontBlanc/photos/6266
I guess it depends on what you are looking for from your skiing holiday, but I'd certainly recommend the area, and if you find Megeve itself too expensive, there are plenty of cheaper options very close by.

Have to say I just hate the skiing there, is just plain boring, small vertical and little gradient (I have not very fond memories of crossing a stream in heavy rain in early Jan in Megeve). Only +ve is Les Contamines and St Nicholas etc is near it and they have some fantastic skiing. Staying in St Gervais as above is a great idea. Then you just need to look at the freezing level and head uphill to Chamonix Valley or hit the numerous and fantastic resorts around. Many a happy days spent skiing in area when avalanche risk shuts down Cham.

Tony_H, what's your view on the world being flat??
I'll meet you in Chamonix on my annual visit when I'm reminding myself how lucky I am. Will you be in the English bar??

Tony, I'm glad to find that we agree on two things.
1. Your post was uneducated and therefore worthless, and
2. It's best you don't come to Megeve.
Love the icons by the way.
