BA and ski carriage

I really wouldn't pack my helmet in a soft ski case. Have you seen how they get thrown around?
If your helmet takes a signifigant bang it will need replacing.

I sometime have the same problems with my bobble hats, it just get a snag and they just need replacing 8)

Mind you my head always seems to mend itself, and I have yet to replace it.

Check this to be sure, but I think BA allow you one case plus one ski bag FREE on transatlantic flights.
Get yourself ski bags online, I got a double bag which is triple padded for £40 at skiwear4less. Wheels are easier but I put mine on my shoulder and wheel the case, not a big deal. Its all about how much stuff you can get in the ski bag ;-) I put all my outdoor clothes in the ski bag packed around the skis (use bubble wrap as well and cover edges, tips, tails and bindings properly.
Boots - pack them in your suitcase.
