I've worked out that if you're going DIY, you're better off flying with one of the major airlines where they either give you free ski carriage or they allow you a bag weight which can include skis.
Lufthansa and Swiss allowed free ski carriage last year, British airways give you 23kg per bag per person free. And you'll probably buy a return flight for around £150pp or less, which involves a choice of daily flights mainly, flying out of Heathrow or London city (far better than gatwick, Luton etc) and the benefit of using a more reliable and professional body of people.
Put it like this, if you're flight gets cancelled, you'll get out onto another one, whereas easyjet or Ryanair will allow you to claim a refund but leave you to get yourself home.
I'm going DIY in march and am flying BA Heathrow to Lyon, although I could have flown easyjet or monarch into Grenoble for a cheaper headline price, and a slightly shorter transfer time the other end. But for me there's no comparison.
Easyjet ski/snowboard carriage - what would you do?

I use SWISS whenever possible now and usually pay no more than £110 return for a hassle free time, no worries about luggage, pleasant staff and chocolate before you land.

I regularly take 2 sets of skis in one (single) ski bag. Never had a problem.

With Lufthansa your supposed to call them beforehand and advise them you are taking your skis and advise approximate weight. Free ski carriage for a 2min phone call works for me.
