£87 for the intermediate skis with no frills (like insurance or boots) doesn't seem too bad to me...I would have thought that this was better than buying a pair of s/h skis..depends how often you go and how many weeks..2-3 weeks a season and I bought

Bandit's suggestion is right on the mark!
It is your call chin to nose with this consideration. If you are fit, active person who does all sorts of other sports and "progress" well in term of competence, then tend to go for nose level!
Other variables are also suggested by others. Yes the "cut" or ski design should be considered. That is that R=,,,,, number ! Are top level SL ski has a R=13. That is it is very responsive and has a tight turn ability! Just wiggle your ears at it will turn! Not sure if you would want such a ski yet!
