Here Here ( or is it hear hear!?) Mac Daddy ( Nice to see a familiar name by the way) I have to say it's the 'without notice' bit that particularly galled me, but I'm glad I found this forum before withdrawal symptoms forced me to reach for the credit card. May this forum prosper and grow...and remain free to use!

I'm in the same boat too. I'd also agree with Davidof that the real kick in the teeth was barring out the people that had contributed to the information database.

Be interesting to see if they reopen it to non-members when the information in those pages "ages".

And Cliffe, there's no way I'd join just to use the chat board, and not living in London means there's no real point in joining anyway.

Annie - many thanks for the wishes for the Forum; I hope it will grow to fill the gap left by the SCGB. Let's make it so... if you have some skiing mates, point them here too.

It most certainly will remain free to use; skiing is expensive enough as it is without having to pay to get (or give) advice.

Hello, fellow ex posters of SCGB. I was actually thinking of joining the club but now - no way! Whatever they say about wanting to be inclusive, it seems that a few insults by idiots, (or alternatively was it constructive criticisms by informed skiers?) was enough to make them retire into their own cosy, we're OK you're not, world.

Incidently - Davidof, are you the David of Jungfrau region fame?

no, not at all... who were you thinking of?

I thought having an open chat forum was a good way to introduce people to the ski club so was a bit surprised at the action.

yeah but maybe their actions were more a result of it being cheaper to ban non members than to get new forum software to stop sad annoying hackers from messing about in their forum?

I'm not standing up for their actions as i was pretty gutted about loosing this valuable resource, which incidently i'd have happilly paid a small fee for access to their site as opposed to becoming a member which frankly wouldn't have any benifit for me as i generally only get 2 trips a year.

I really think a bit of notice, even a few days, would have been nice. Or even suggesting another place for non members to congregate?

Oh well, such is life. Glad this forum is here.

rant over ;)

I'm a refugee as well, but I know from talking to David Goldsmith who has done a super job on behalf of the 'registered non-members' us that the establishment is having second thoughts. Expect to see an announcement some. For my part I would be sad to see the Ski Club go. I think it has done a lot for British skiing but it's best days are well behind it. I'm also an ex-member who left because I couldn't see what they were doing for me. I am certain the future is in forums like this, but at some stage, especially if there are lots of members, a la Ski Club forums then it may be become difficult to resist commercial pressures.

Another refugee, but I'm somewhat disppointed that there's nothing which seems as active as the SCGB forum was. I've just noticed that i'm the only person online here and that there are only 61 members!
