crispyapplepie wrote:Hi all I'm currently looking at places for next season and after looking around Serre Chevalier looks like it could be a great option. I'll be going as part of a group, probably 8/10 people all adults and mixed ability...

Can anyone offer me any advice where is best to stay, what's it like for eating out etc, is there much to do on an evening. Also if you have any advice on accommodation that would be great. Not fussed if it's a hotel or chalet or even self catering.

Many thanks
Christian
Sorry, I missed a couple of points:

Eating out is never cheap in France. All the villages have a choice of places to eat, but I really would recommend catered chalet to keep costs down.

Villeneuve has several nicely positioned chalets through the tour ops, and Monetier with Ski Miquel would be a good shout.

Both villages have bars and restaurants if you want to wander out, although its hardly banging. There is a lively bar at the foot of the Aravet gondola called Yeti which often has live music and serves cheap food and drink. If its snowing, its half price pints!!!!!

Tony as always a great and informative response. I've read your review on the place and must say I'm sold on the place so just need to find a deal now and I think were done....

Hi Christian, I think Briancon is an excellent choice having stayed there a number of times myself. I stayed with my family and a huge group of friends at this chalet -

http://www.discoverbriancon.com/

It is very comfortable for large groups as there is plenty of space to relax in (especially in the main house, we had to take on the apartment as well just to fit us all in). The owners run the chalet themselves and are very accommodating.

It is a little further out of the resort but we never had an issue with transport as regular buses take you from village to village with your ski pass and taxis are very easy to come by as well as the shuttle service the chalet provides. Being the working town of the area it does feel more local than the other villages down the valley but this also adds to the atmosphere especially in the old town which has some fantastic restaurants and bars.

Hope that helps a bit, we enjoyed this place so much we've booked for New Year 2011/2012 so sorry if you were planning for that week, its taken :)

Regards,
Polly

Hi Tony,

No longer called 'The Yeti' its been taken over and is now known as 'The Grotte'. Not much has changed within, still has live music and cheap food and drink, ok for lunch but not evening meals out.

How stupid of me, I have only been when its been called La Grotte!!! Agree its ok for a lunch snack but not an evening meal. Lively little place though. Not recommended for early breakfast as they're often clearing up last nights mess!
