Have you considered the Pyrenees as an alternative to the Alps? The skiing is considerably cheaper, the local people are friendly and there is a real French feel. Bareges-La Mongie (Tourmalet) is the largest resort in the French Pyrenees, with over 100km of piste and skiing for all abilities. The local ski school is fantastic and the Pyrenees are a great place to learn to ski. Stay in Bareges - a traditional mountain village. The night life is a bit quiet, but there are some lively, friendly bars. See www.mountainbug.com for more information and the best chalet-accommodation in the Pyrenees.

The best resort in Europe is Val Thorens, without question. It has access to the 3 valleys, plus is the only resort in the three valleys with direct access to Orrelle the so called fourth valley. Reliable snow, really nice mix of people, oh, and the old grotty architecture is being improved with pine cladding that makes it much better. We stayed in here http://www.valthorensapartment.eu/ last year, and would highly recommend it. The most amazing view I've ever had.

If you want good snow, varied runs, pretty picture post card towns, trees, and prices that don't require a 2nd mortgage, I'd give France a miss and go for Austria - we did and wouldn't go to France again - especially Alp D'Huez with regard to concrete and prices!

Hi-I'm not advertising anything, so in that sense I have no vested interest. But try this for size. St Martin de Belleville-the undiscovered gem in the Trois Vallees. This is by far the most attractive resort in the area, a real town with town hall, market square, baroque church, and attractive restaurants. Accommodation tends to be in chalets and appartments, all built to blend in with the local architecture. (If you're after Alpine charm avoid Val Thorens). It's at 1400m so there is plenty of snow. Lifts that get you up into some of the best and most uncrowded pistes in the area, but with 600km of runs for the more ambitious amongst you. Having spent a season in the 3 valleys, this is the place I would go back to if I went there for a holiday.
If you want alpine charm, forget Tignes-far too modern, and in January can get very cold and windy. My first ever ski trip was Les Deux Alps-and I would never go back. I've never been to Chamonix, but I agree with the advice that novices would find it less acceptable.

Ash28, you may like to consider La Rosiere, it's a traditional mountain village, so it doesn't look like Basildon with snow, there's agood mix of runs and the skiing is linked with Le Thuile in Italy so it has a different ambience to other French resorts. It's high at 1850 metres so it's very snow sure and the slopes in January will be relatively empty, it's very popular with |french families so it's only in the main holiday periods thgat it gets busy. There's a reasonable apres-ski scene and it's not wildly expensive compared to the mega resorts nearby. The lift pass is also very good value. We have to declare an interest in promoting La Rosiere, we have a chalet there -Le Mouflon, with some very good deals in January. Our website is ww.tracksvacations.com where you can find full details.

Agree that St Martin is a lovely place,

After Skiing the last 6-7 seasons in the three valleys, i found that St Martin can be a bit of a patchy and icy nighty to get back to in the early season, and very mushy towards the end, as it's lower altitude shows in the extremes of the weather.

If you're just going to use it as a base for access to the 3V then it's fine.

Hi,

I also love St Martin de Belleville in the 3 valleys - it is a true french village but offers great skiing as well. From easy runs to fantastic off pise skiing.... you should have fun where ever you go though...

Alpe d'Huez is well worth considering for a mixed group of skiers. There is excellent off piste and many black runs for the experts and a huge bowl of excellent easy runs for the beginners immediately above the resort. Alpe d'Huez boasts the longest black (16 kilometres), and also the greatest descent (3,300 - 1100 metres) without the need to use lifts, in the Alps.
Sharon Shinwell objected to prices and concrete. To avoid both stay at one of the satellite resorts e.g. Oz en Oisans , Vaujany or Villard Reculas. They are attractive, small scale and relatively inexpensive. The mountain scenery, throughout the domain,is, by common consent, outstanding.
