I am a keen biker and I had problems with burning thighs after 40 minutes. I had a shoe fitting with at my local bike shop and it appears that the shoes where the wrong ones, so my advice to almost everyone who suffers from these types of pains (during skiing, bike riding etc ...

Check you equipment, shoes etc .. Perhaps it does not fit your bodysize (anymore) etc ...

Stefan brings up a good point.

Many skiers have no idea that the "inclination" of the foot bed can cause issues!

On many ski boots there are two way to deal with inclination.

The first is an adjustment behind the boot shell. It usually is a screw with two positions.

It can also be a "slider" system. Up = more incline down = less incline.

Often what happens is the boots are in a "aggressive, forward position " That is the skiers is positioned forward more,,but skier is not ready for this position and thus tends to lean back.
More pressure on thighs.

The second cause is situated at heel section INSIDE the boot liner. You can add a heel insert to raise hell. This is done often to skiers that have too much play near the arch.

Again this raising of the heel may cause issues. Any modification to boots must be done carefully with a knowledgeable person. One rule of thumb in any boot modification; "less is best" !

In conclusion,, you should never have "burning thighs" if you ski correctly,, effectively and have correctly fitted boots!

90% of time burning thighs = poor skiing technique because you are sitting back on ski tails !
10% is due to poor alignment of boots or equipment other issues

pavelski wrote:Yes doing exercises can help but,,,,even a body builder who trains everyday will have "burning thighs" after skiing 30-40 IN AN INCORRECT STANCE !

90% of skiers ski with weight on their heels and as speed increases they tense up and lean back even more !

Just watch beginners and,,,,,,,look at their ski tips often off the snow,,flapping !!!! A sure sign of heel pushing!

Try this,,to solve the thigh issue! ( assuming you are fit ) !

Begin with mind. Think "pressure at all times at ski tip"
Think relax and let skis do work.
Think soft with edges
Think,,,"too fast" then go across and up slope ! Let slope slow you down!

Then;
Put pressure on big toe at all times

Do NOt go so fast down hill

Enjoy your skiing,,why go so fast,,,,

Here is the critical hint ( which will seem wrong to you ) !

The faster you go,,,,the softer you must be with edges
The faster you go,,,,the less body motion is required.
The faster you go,,,the less muscle you need to tun skis
The faster you go,,,the more forward you must be! ( to be ahead of the skis in the turns)
The faster you go,,,tiny "adjustments" are multiplied 10 times !

Just move your nose a few millimeters to the right as you soar,,,,,see what happens!

Hope this helps you,,this season!

Pavel

I ski with someone who is less fit and less strong than me, but who never gets tired legs and never appears to need much effort, from moderately slow to moderately quick, on piste, in powder, in the woods. This proves to me that my ski technique is pretty crap, even if people say nice things about it, and even if I can get down difficult slopes fairly safely. My theory is that if your legs are tired from normal skiing, you are skiing wrong. So am I, but I have not worked out how to fix it. The above post by Pavel may help.

Having personally progressed over the years, in particular in recent times, I have to say that fitness is not the key factor. I am less fit than I used to be, but I get much less tired skiing now than I used to. I am totally convinced it is technique, and that mine has improved so much that makes the difference. I am sure if I was fitter it would also make a difference and I'd be better, but being super fit does not make you a good skier.

I think Pavel, as always, hits the nail on the head.

I agree.

The only time I feel like I have done some work is when I have been walking through deep powder (with skis on) to get to untracked areas.

When I'm skiing on piste I find it effortless - I am told I ski fast!

I didn't even have any muscle aches at the beginning of the season after a seven month break.

I don't get any aches from piste at all now even that my daily skis have 94mm waist and are fairly stiff, but first few proper off-piste runs make me feel my legs the next day, usually calves and lowe core muscles, and sometimes shoulders from aggressive pole planting and really leaning on poles. I think because the rotary movement is still relatively new for me. But as I found out this is all nothing compared to bootpacking in the snow uphill. But I don't get tired while skiing powder at all now because my skis ski themselves:)
