If we've all quite finished throwing snowballs at each other, there's another organising type thing I'd like to say, and since it applies to everyone going abroad I thought I'd post it up here ...
Would everyone please make sure their mobiles will work in
Tignes. I don't think it's worth us trying to sort out CB radios or anything, as texts seem to be cheap enough.
I know relatively little about mobiles so if anyone wants to add anything to this they are very welcome :)
My younger daughter is out in
Val Thorens now, with her Uni ski and snowboard club, and it wasn't until she was out there that she discovered her mobile won't work in France :(
We've never had this trouble before, with our Pay as you Go mobiles. Usually we get an automatic text as we come out of the tunnel on the Eurostar saying 'welcome to France' or French Orange, or whatever, and all is well for the duration of the holiday. All we have to do is make sure we've topped up with credit before we go.
One of her friends sent me a text describing her predicament and I phoned Orange to find out what was going on. It seems that because I have a Sim card monthly contract on that phone, the sim card is automatically locked to 'roaming' abroad. They said they would unlock it now, but it would take 24 hours and it might not work because she is already there. Apparently we should have done it before she left, but I didn't know it was locked.
However, I reckon that International distress call 112 should still work on her locked phone, because it is supposed to 'roam' looking for an available network.
And in the past I have had a message from one of her friends asking me to top up their Pay as You Go phone from here, because they couldn't do it in France.
Another problem is using the internet on mobile phones when abroad. Apparently if you're using a Wireless network, like in the chalet, there's no charge, but otherwise it can get very expensive, especially if you don't realize the internet is on.
So - something we've all got to consider as a group is how we're going to communicate with each other :)
I have most people's mobile phone numbers, and I'll try and make sure I've got everyone's before we go. And if everyone is willing I can post the numbers up on our Excel sheet on FB.
Then - we will just have to remember to bring our mobiles on holiday with us
