Hi all,
Reading a post about ATM's in Andora reminded me that I have been meaning to post a thread about paying for things in Austria (well at least my bit of the Tirol).
The thing is that you need to be very careful about assuming that shops, restaurants etc will accept your credit cards. Many merchants will only accept Maestro cards which can catch out the unwary.
Cash is very much the payment method of preference.
Having said all this you will find some of the restaurants in the heart of resorts will take Visa, Mastercard etc but to be safe do check before eating a 5 course meal and then find the waiter saying “Nein!” All that washing up can be a right pain!
Happy paying,
Jan

I'm sure she'll find a way around that.
Not in Austria it's not. It's interesting to compare the denominations that ATM's in different countries use actually, Austria goes for high notes, Germany about average and in France the smallest possible. All Euros of course.
I was being a joker there.
But I do recall this past summer seeing signs up in France, especially along the motorways, saying that even the €200 notes were not to be offered.

Handling over €500 notes can also be a problem.

I found this out to my cost last year, highly embarassing. I still have the callouses on my hands now  This year I have found a solution, it is a prepay credit card that is actually a Maestro, check it out at http://www.tuxedocard.com
I used this when we went to Venice in August and it worked fine, the added bonus of course is being prepay, the wife can't get carried away in the shops

I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!
