Brimster,
I was wondering about why the skis were left at the bottom of the chairlift as well. It sounds rather as though they were all told to take their skis off and put them there for some reason, at the end of the lesson, before they went back to their chalet/apartment/hotel.

But I can't think why - unless it was because they all went into a cafe for a drink or something together, and the others went back and collected their skis. I've always thought it was very curious the way people just leave their skis outside cafes without locking them up or anything, but I do it as well because everyone else is doing it (and mine are only hires skis!).

And people do leave their skis by the gondola, but in a locker, so maybe it was some confusion over the French/English translation?

And another thing - I have been on a sailing course, for example, and you do just leave your dinghy on the beach, for someone else to put away - and I was a bit worried about that, because I used to have my own dinghy and I'd never have just left it on the beach.

As Silverflora says, learning what's normal/protocol in a new sport isn't always easy. And I guess in ski-ing it varies quite a bit from resort to resort.

I think some of you need to think be for your post and use some of your obedient conmen sense.

Olly re-read the posting we have offered support to Silverflora with their dry slope skiing, the postings have changed due to the poster "I think" leaving hire skis
skis unattended possibly over night due to them thinking that it was the done thing, if anything it is not taking the piss it is a warning to others new to sport
what they should do with their skis, I personally think it is quite amazing any one would think that leaving your skis unattended overnight was the done thing.

I have to agree with Ian on the taking the piss point. I know that Tony thought that Silverflora was taking the piss with the post but thats it.... (in my opinion at least)

I'm hoping that Silverflora will come back on here once they're back and let us know how they got on for the week and also what happened in relation to the skis. I'm guessing something was said or done in relation to make them think they could leave their skis by the lift.

I do also have to say that I didn't think 300euros was that expensive by the rental company given the cost of the skis although would be useful to know what make and model the skis were and how the rental shop justified the cost to silverflora i.e did they pluck a figure out of the air or is it a standard cost provided for in their t&cs!?

Brimster,
I think the point about the market value of the skis is that it's the end of the season now, and the decent hire shops will buy new gear for the new season (probably around Novemember I would guess). I know Intersport do a big sale of their old rental stuff in November.

Edge to Edge (a rental company) have their sale starting on the 17th April, and they are selling their old skis at half price after servicing and with 12 months guarantee on them and only a maximum of 6 weeks use.

I should think Silverflora's beginner's skis would have been pretty cheap new in the first place, and after a whole season of being whacked about by beginners wouldn't be worth much. I can't see them being worth more than about £100 myself (not that I know anything about skis - but I do know quite a bit about running a business). Maybe someone else has a more accurate idea of their value.

I do hope Silverflora comes back on and tells us what happened.

Same thing happened to me with my first post,I was disappointed as I was asking for helpful info at the time, one guy thought I must be a soft target, as first time poster an all,he got my reply but never apologised.

In my case & I would suspect others do the same they read posts on this forum for some time to get a taster before signing up & most start with a question rather than offering answers.

To some of the knowledgeable & experienced posters on here of which there are many, some of the posts can look like a wind up, due I would think to the posters lack of knowledge & inexperience.so maybe give them a bit of leeway at least till the second post.

Oh & bye the way I am not having a rant at anyone, because I think this forum is very good & you all made it this way.

Trimmed and locked. Brooksy's post is a GPWM.

New posters/skiers should always be given the benefit of the doubt and assisted. As experienced skiers, the rest of us have a responsibility to help them - if only for all of our safety.

Silverflora would be most welcome to give us an update and I hope he/she does.
