Switzerland used to be considered as expensive. However since the £ sank against the Euro, and the Tarentaise French decided to squeeze the (mostly British) pips, then Swiss resorts seem pretty good value.

Head for Saas-Fee to be blown away by the amazing mountain scenery :D

Saas Fee is not rated as a beginners resort, plus, you have to trog to the slopes. But, oh yes, the views are beautiful!

Life is made a lot easier for beginners if the accomodation is next to the beginner slopes, and close to the ski hire. Also, as mentioned by a previous poster, it is advantegeous to be in a small resort.

You will have some starter costs, such as ski/boot hire, ski school, some alpine clothing. So you will want to mitigate this by finding a good holiday price. The tour operators do offer "learn to ski" locations, and some offer packages that include equipment hire, ski school and what minimal lift pass requirements there are.

Don't worry about night life, you will be too tired!

With regard to the illness that you have suffered, it is one of the great aspects of skiing, that it helps to put our lives into perspective!

And finally, you seem to be taking a positive attitude to your fear of flying. Many of us have suffered so. Tony H worked at his. My solution was simple ~ I wanted to go and ski in Australia! So London to Sydney was my first flight! I have subsequently been in a glider that crashed into a tree. But you are right, you have to do this yourself. The rewards for moving forward are great.

Come and join us.

There are many ski resorts to choose from in the US particularly in Colorado, California and Utah. Best Examples would be in Deer Valley and Alta in Utah and Winter Park in Colorado. Aside from skiing, you could also try other activities they offered there. They also offered lessons for beginners so you don't have to worry about a thing.

Nice places, with high price tags, and since the original poster wanted to go by train from the UK not too relevant.

Have you been drinking?

Yes

I thought so 8) neither the word 'good' nor 'article' belong in the same sentence as 'The Daily Mail'.

How about~ "Good riddance to the Daily Mail"?

Anyway, Tino, we all know you are a closet DM reader ~ that's how you became so knowledgeable!
