Halfway to the resort we had to swap from a coach to a minibus/space cruiser and he was not impressed with the tube and had some issues getting onboard and strapped to the ski box.

It does protect the boards/skis but I get the feeling they may not take it next time.

I've got a padded ski bag for my skis and I tend to wrap a couple of fleeces & towells around the bindings and the top and bottom of the skis.
So far they've been ok and fingers crossed they'll stay like that!

My wife will probably get skis this time and we'll need to decide whether to also buy her a ski bag or buy a double sport tube/hardcase.

Go by car,,,,problem solved 8)

Not if you dont want to drive, if you want to get to your resort in a matter of hours, and want to do a package cost effectively. Personally, I am hoping to try and ski drive holiday in the near future, but they are most certainly not for the majority. The only 2 big advantages I can see are

1. Being able to go where you want
2. Being able to take what you want

Otherwise it adds a lot of time and expense to your holiday.

Horses for courses, though.

I very rarely use the car when I'm in resort but you are correct as I have said before unless you are carrying people who share the cost it is not cheaper than a package, I think I worked out the cost of last years hols at around 2k, but benefits are the quality of accommodation you can book the extra skis you can carry plus I can fill the gaps left in the car with cases of wine

I have never driven to a ski resort,
But I would have thought one of the biggest advantages of doing so is that of added flexibility, so that one can get a good last minute bargain on the accommodation.

I have noticed that flights and transfers always seem to sell out before the accommodation does, particularly during peak season. So, as long as you secure a ferry/train crossing of the Channel it means you can go anywhere within a reasonable driving distance of a port/cross channel railway terminus.

Transfers from the airport to ski resort can easily cost £100 per person when they're not part of a package.

And it also means you can visit some of the smaller, more interesting ski resorts that the tour operators don't go to.

I have thought about this...London to Grand Massif is 720 miles (my preferred route) which costs £90 in fuel each way plus ferry (£50-£100 ) and about a day to drive so with 2 up about £150 each return.

Against that Flight £100 skis £35 airport parking £25 transfers £65 = £210

then the saving you make in not having to buy food in the resort (bring it with or go to the hypermarket and I might not have to get up at 2 am to get to the airport and of course the flexibility of being able to go to different places and go for say 8 days instead of the prescribed 6

Daved - £25 for airport parking sounds pretty cheap to me. I thought it was more like £70 for the week? Which airport is that?

Thanks Daved,
The hotel I was looking at was parking at £10 per day that you're not actually in the hotel, so the airport would be cheaper for a week's holiday away.
