As I have said earlier... I really fancy a visit to Austria and believe that a good resort is only made better with good snow.
If travelling Jan / early Feb (not UK school hols). Flying to Munich.
What are the personal experiences of J2skiers of reasonably close resorts / intermediate ability / skiers (rather than boarders) / and access to a few drink establishments.
First thoughts are Soll / Mayerhofen?? :?:
Is the Ski Welt are linked like the Portes de Soleui is (sorry for spelling)??
Am I likely to get 4 night accommodation at this time of year in Austria??
For the record I kinda agree with previous comments about snow in the street make the whole winter holiday experience better - but I'd rather have it on he MOUNTAIN!!! :)
Why so low in Austria??

Then go for both

Hey - depending on a year end bonus - stranger things have happened.
I've done France twice a season for the past 5 years. I know what to expect in terms of accommodation / transfers / food / snow / skiing etc.
But I do 'prize' my winter trips and therefore don't want to see too much grass under my skis - if you know what I mean.

Crashandburn - I can only speak from experience of Mayrhofen, but they have a website www.mayrhofen.at with English version and you can search and book hotels, B&Bs etc for any time of year, most for any number of nights. You might have to pick up the phone and find out re availability, but the website allows you to check on specific dates on most properties. They range from around 20 euros a night B&B upwards. Ideally you want to be in Mayrhofen itself or Zentrum area, although other areas locally are excellently served by the free ski bus.
The skiing is superb. Mainly intermediate, lots of reds, fairly quiet out of peak times once you get up there are away from the obvious main runs. Good food well priced, cheapest beer I have come across for some time off the slopes and the local stuff (Zillertaller Pils) is superb. Lots of shops in town, but the town is at 690m so sometimes does not have snow on the streets. Skiing is upwards of 1500m and its got an excellent record for snow. 400km plus around the region, and I'd recommend a day at Zell and Gerlos on the bus or free train.
Excellent place I have been to 5 times and would go again no bother, and have no hesitation in recommending it if you like a busy town full of bars, ski shops and restaurants, plenty of mileage on the slopes, short transfer from Innsbruck (75 mins), Salzburg (100 mins) or Munich (2 hours), and easy to get to under your own steam by car or train.
PM me if you want specific info.
