Amanda, you seem to be quite serious about this. After your pm, explaining the situation, I spoke to Nick at the Staffler, who does employ quite a few Brits. The issue is that there are defined seasons for this, and most, but not all, people go back to the UK in the closed season. The main reason for this is to cut their costs in their non-working time.

Life in the Wildschoenau is somewhat different from the UK. Of course many people have a main stream job, as we tend to do. If however, you are a lift attendant, ski instructor, ski fitter, etc, then after the ski season ends, people move on to a different jobs. There are predominant jobs, farming, timber, building work, tending to be male jobs. Many locals that i am friendly with have four or five jobs over the year, much of this on an informal basis.

If you are a winter hotel worker, then in many hotels there is summer work. There is a 6 week spring gap, and a three month Autumn gap. So there is an issue of supporting yourself when the work is not there.

On the issue of low cost apartment rental, maybe L will be a bit more knowledgable than I. I say low cost, because if you pay visitor prices, you would be in the region of £50/night for an apartment. I know that a lot of semi-permanent workers stay at the top end of the village, maybe 400/600m past the Bichlwirt. But I don't know the contacts. For this kind of info, you need to be there and talk to people.

Do you speak any German?
