why is it dangerous? what danger to you am I skiing with an Ipod?

What's dangerous is people who think they can hear a skier, identify their location and speed predict where they're going and react, if you think about it that's not possible.

I do not believe that you can be totally aware of your surroundings, hence you are a danger to your self and other people, last year a skier skied over the tails of my daughter's skis just think how dangerous that could have been if the skier had a distraction like an ipod.
You ise may be a very talented person and skier who can cope with the loss of one his senses, but there are some idiots out there who might think it's very cool to ski with an ipod without a care to the damage that can be done to them selves and other people.
Next time your out and about in the street just check out the people with ipods walking the streets are they totally aware of what is happening around them, answer no.

This is an interesting topic now. I ride with an iPod about 60% of the time, although only in clear conditions, I feel the loss of sight and sound a bit unnerving.

I have to agree with Ise 100% on this. Infact I would almost say (I repeat ALMOST) that it may even enhance the safety of some. In the FIS ski rules it says nothing about listening for people advancing. This for reasons already pointed out is somewhat futile. It is all about observation with the eyes and knowing your own ability.

Some may even say that cutting off one of the senses enhances the others to compensate. I must admit to feeling more focused when listening to music, I seem to ride smoother, but hey this may just be a perception.

I fail to see the difference between an Ipod and a helmet however when it comes to muffling sound.

Just be carefull of the piste bashers )

tino, I think it comes under the banner of " due care and attention " enhancing senses really applies to the permanent loss of a sense. I just shudder with the thought of half term crowded pistes it could be carnage.

I see no difference either between someone wearing an iPod and someone having a couple of beers or schnapps at lunchtime, both impair your senses to some degree, both are allowed. We cant reduce the risk of something until it is no longer fun, then the risk wouldn't be worth taking.

I think you will find that maybe 20% or more of people already ski with music on. (this is just personal observation)

Is this argument exclusive or limited to Ipods or are we including Sony MP3's and other music playing devices like phones and some MP4 players? They must be feeling left out.

I take your point tino, but again it is a trend and in the hands of the in experienced is a recipe for disaster, I really do not want to sound dramatic but how long will it be before we here of accidents. I think we have to agree to disagree on this one.

Fair enough fella, but FTR...

Accidents may well have already happened due to this, like they have due to alcohol or inexperienced people on grades too hard for them, or simply because accidents happen.

I enjoy going riding for a few days alone, I love to escape and have some tunes on whilst I do it, I would be very upset to see it banned.

Mind I would be even more upset if I wasn't allowed a beer )

I see your point, but don't see a suggestion to address it.
