Snowmaking in the Alpbachtal is a very sophisticated operation as it has to be because of the low altitude. However, due to environmental regulations, snowmaking has to stop at the end of February (so they build up a big 'reservoir' during early winter.

Ok. We are staying in Niederau arriving on 20 Dec. what would happen with ski school for children. Can they go higher or would we have the option to go to the ski welt if that was better. Getting desperate now, even looking at the glacier, says its a 1.10 mins drive away but I would do the drive if it meant we could ski. What do you think?

i don't arrive to the 28th
I'll consider sticking with st Anton hotel and driving up to 2 hours each way to ski
or finding hotel closer to the snow, i have over two weeks for conditions to improve before i make that call but i remain optomistic

Assuming your children are either young and/or early skiers... they don't want or need large volumes of snow to have fun. Trying to keep young'uns warm and happy when it's -15C and bucketing snow is "challenging" (been there, done that).

As of right now, Niederau's slopes are white and cold (it's not deep but it doesn't need to be) and there are 10 days to go... there's no snow in the current forecast but the weather systems are in flux so that may well change. It is cold enough for them to run the cannons.

No point in getting desperate! You can be sure the locals (tourist office and hoteliers) will help with contingency plans, but they won't be doing that until they're needed.

Worst case scenario, you'll still be in a pretty village with friendly locals near Xmas! 8)

Thanks everyone. Just spoke to the hotel owner in niederau and she said not to worry we will be able to ski. They have guests who skied yesterday and just had to travel 30 minutes. I'm not stressing anymore!!

I reckon that would probably be in Auffach which is a better ski area anyway but Dave Mac is the expert on Neiderau and will know more

When it comes to ski school, now you mentioned a "she" gave you a response. Hence I am guessing that you are staying with Gill at the Hotel Sonschein. If so, there is a bit of a walk up to the ski centre, but right next to the road there are really good children's facilities.

If you are staying at the Hotel Austria, (with Angelica), this is a good location, just across the road into children's class.
