I would deff recomend takeing some group leasons on a dry ski slope. The snow domes are just a bit of a rip off.

In glouster you can get 2 hours of coaching and 1 hour of free shkiing 30 mins eather side of the leason for £15. when it cost you £25 for 1 hour of recreational skiing at tamworth on a very over crowded slope.

So unless you are roleing in money go up the the dry slope and give it a go and i promis it is not half as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

Also how can anyone expect to improve your skiing when you go skiing once a year for a week. skiing takes alot of practis.

I agree with that one Olly,if you pick up the basic skills on the dry slope and those skills will transfer to snow and save you a lot of time on your backside on your expensive ski holiday 8)
and yes the snow domes are a rip off

Milton Keynes do special cheap offers on their snow dome

http://snozoneuk.com/html/milton-keynes/activities-prices/snow-slope/main-slope-activities/discounted-passes/

Like, ladies morning on Thursdays - 2 hours coaching for £27-
Monday and Friday mornings - 3 hours for £35 adults, £28 junior

I costed out my latest ski holiday in Courchevel, and it cost me £26 per hour of actual ski-ing time (£1100/7 X 6)

I admit, I am rather frightened of the dry ski slope after I broke my shoulder on it, and I won't ski on it within 6 weeks of my ski holiday (so that I give the potential break time to heal). In fact, we were at Pembrey shortly before our ski holiday buying helmets, and they offered us a free go on the slope, but I wouldn't risk it. My daughter did though, and I admit I laughed a bit at her, having to do snowplough turns (she's a very good skier) for the first half hour or so, until she'd adjusted to the plastic mat.

Olly,
I would like to ski more, but for me it's 50 miles to the nearest dry ski slope, and other than that it's the Milton Keynes one for me - ? 200 miles away (possibly not the closest, but the most convenient for me).
I have managed to improve, but I have to pack a lot of intensive learning into my week away ski-ing.

Sorry Ali i was not takeing a stab at you.

luckly we only live 25 miles from a dry slope. i ski every wednesday and have improved so much by doing this.

I was once told it is easy to lurn to ski and very hard to master. Which i think everyone can agree with.

Also the instructor i have is brilliant and spends 30 mins every leason doing balence exercises and things liek that and i cant think that i have fell over properly in the last year on the dry slope. The time i did i was trying to ski parell backwords and cought the back of my skis lol.

It's okay, Olly, I didn't think you were having a go at me. I'm so pleased that you've managed to improve on the dry ski slope. That's great

You're lucky to have such a good instructor. I have been thinking about having a mini holiday in London in a few months, buying myself some ski boots, and going to the Milton Keynes snow dome to try them out - preferably for some sort of performance course.

Obviously we don't all live in the Alps (or other ski regions) so we have to make do with the dry slopes or snow domes in between our real ski holidays.

I'm not keen on dry slopes, having broken my wrist on one. But in terms of practise (and if it's all you've got) then I think there is a place for them.
My kids used to belong to the ski club at Gloucester dry slope and some the kids were amazing skiers.

One of the girls had only used the dry slope and never been on snow. After 2 snow trips (her 1st ever time was to race in the English Championships) she was chosen to train with the British Squad.

I' don't suppose she'll never be Chemmy Alcott, but all her early skills were learnt on plastic.

It definitely helps as at least you'll know what to expect on your 1st day.

I was at Chill Factore last night taking advantage of the 2.5. hours for 1.5 hour price 8) They also do a two for one on a Tuesday. There were lots of beginners/improvers and you do get the feeling of "real" snow and lots of posters have recommended the ski in a day package before the first holiday.

We were saying it could just do to be longer and steeper - I would love to go to the Dubai one sun, shopping and snow what a combination :D

I saw the Dubai one last October, and it's awesome! It's the size of about 3 footy pitches, one of the 5 runs is about 400m long, and it even has a chair lift! I hate to think how much the energy bills are!

I didn't have time to have a go in, but it's about £25 for a 2 hour session. My best mate lives there, so I said I'd take her daughter next time I visited.
