Shame it wasn't done the keyhole way.
He'll probably be sore, possibly sore enough to stop him skiing but unlikely to damage himself if he does ski.

It will be very easy for the internal mesh to fail. It was explained to me that a keyhole is just a single mesh stitched to the abdoment wall.

I had open surgery, blood vessels and outer tissue lifted and one mesh stitched to the Abd wall. Vessels and tissue laid back, and a second mesh stitched over. Upper internal stiches, and then skin staples.

In both cases, one has to avoid lifting weights, or strenuous exercise.

I only know of two op failures, both with keyhole method. (Both where the people went back to work too early)

So are you advising this person to go or to cancel?

Neither, I am advising caution. Years after my op, big skiing days stress the internal. I only knocked back a 13 week gap to a 12 week.

There is a failure rate for all types of hernia op - often the failure gets blamed on any number of possible reasons - the "did too much too early" is any easy default option.

The reality he is likely to be in discomfort.
Another key point is whether or not the surgeon is happy for you to so soon. If not and you get unlucky your insurance will probably not cover you. Given that a beer costs £6 what would an air ambulance and a stay in hospital cost?
The surgeon will know what method of repair has been done and at what point the repair will be stable enough to return to strenuous exercise.

Down to 6 sleeps, husband has made excellent recovery clips came out a week ago and suture line already starting to fade. He did not have any post op complication and the only discomfort was from the clips which eased the minute they came out. We had a session at the Chill Factor yesterday and we managed two and a half hr session without any problem. He says he is only going to ski gentle slopes and i am sure if there are even the slightest problem or worry he will call it a day.
