Generally, what distinguishes a skiing jacket from a regular winter jacket is the powder skirt. this is an elasticated inner hem, that stops snow (and the cold) from coming up through the jacket. In warm conditions you might wear a lighter jacket with an elasticated hem, no need for the internal powder skirt.
You can choose between a shell jacket, with no insulation, and an insulated jacket. With a shell jacket, you can choose what layers to wear underneath, but it's is only a shell and provides no insulation, just wind/water protection. The insulated jacket provides additional warmth, but at the expense of versatility. You can overheat on warm days in an insulated jacket.
If I could only take one jacket on a ski vacation, it would be a shell type. I would also take a light soft shell jacket to be worn underneath the shell on cold days, and as the outer layer on warm days.
All these jackets should have pit zips under the arms for ventilation if needed.

The waterproof part goes over your boots to keep your legs dry, and if you put them inside your boots you will get creases and these will irritate and affect your skiing.
Same with socks, make sure they fit properly and dont waste money on cheap tube socks.

ok sorry i will try to type words without any text speak. even though there wasnt that much in my last post was there?
I brought a coat in the sales today Apline is the make, if someone can tell me if thats good or not.
it has a pocket on the left sleeve but its not see though or anything so how can the scanner scan the lift pass? (or do you just take it out)
it has the powder skirt and hand thinks in the sleeve. dont know what they are called. It also has a cloth attached to some elastic on the inside pocket. is that for cleaning goggles and glasses?
(how did i do with the words. i had to correct my text spelling a few times!)

Thats better!
Yes, the cloth is a goggle wipe. And put your lift pass in your sleeve pocket, the scanner will find it!
