one of the helmets I tried came with a free beanie. My question was why? but that answers it I suppose.

That explains why boarders wear it like that then, seeing as they sit on their asses most of the day, just over the brow of the hill, as they arent going to get sweaty doing that, or the odd jump once an hour are they?

Big advantage of a helmet, compared to a hat, is the ventilation that stops you getting too sweaty - a beanie's going to stuff that up (literally!).
