Very tempting. Certainly adding this my list of possibles for 2013. I like the fact it's off the beaten track and not crowded. There used to be a British-run ski school, I think, run by the Ski2 company in Champoluc. Anyone know if they're still operating?

Hi. The Monte Rosa area has a FANTASTIC potential for the future. We went there at Easter 2010 in out Campervan & stayed up at Gressoney la Trinite ( the middle valley of the 3). This little place is right up at the head of the valley therefore has great accessibility either way. There are 2 gondolas which take you in opposite directions up the mountains, either over to the Alagna side or the other way towards Champolouc. The Alagna side has some of the best steeps I've ever ridden in Italy which are also lovely & long. There are several nice mountain restaurants to stop at on the way back to Gressoney & if there's plenty of snow, you can ride the cat track which winds all the way back down to near the nice bar at the foot of the mountain. This bar shows Heineken Cup Rugby which was very enjoyable for us! The opposite direction, over to Champolouc provided some lovely varied terrain, trees & off-piste to sample as well as the usual wonderful, cheap Italian mountain restaurants. The views from this side on a clear day are breathtaking & you can see Monte Rosa & all the way to Monte Bianco & Switzerland. Well worth taking along a camera. Gressoney is very under-developed but that's what we liked about it. The mountain was really quiet as was the village where we stayed. There are just 2 ski/board supplies shops, 1 small grocery store which has all essentials at quite reasonable prices along with the bar which also does food. There was a Pizza place & another bar but we didn't visit those. We will definitely visit the area again as we lovE the Aosta valley area as a whole. I just won't be relishing the drive up the very narrow, winding mountain road up to the village - a bit hairy to say the least- but there was evidence of a new road being built which would be fantastic. however this might ultimately open up the area to more holiday companies & make it busy. The cost of progress everywhere! Hope that provided a bit of an insight into the area. Feel free to ask about anything that I might have left out & I'll try & answer. Take the plunge! :D

Tony H forgot to mention that usually the coffee comes in a nice cup and saucer with a chocolate or biscuit. Also at apres ski time every bar in the town has free nibbles, pieces of pizza, crisps, cheese etc, just like Val d'Isere!
