Both my ski trips to Switzerland have been great, but like you say a lot depends on the exchange rate at the time. However, everything I have found to be very efficient, polite and 'does what it says on the tin'. However, if you choose to stay in a resort which is known for its glitz and glamour and the sort of people who frequent it, then you will pay more, but if you go for a lesser known place, then you will pay less and ski with the locals and people who are not bothered by name dropping but just out for a lovely day on the slopes, and maybe a hot chocolate and big cake at the end! Certainly Adelboden where I have stayed has been fine, compared to other European countries I have skied - I have not noticed much difference in cost. Like someone else says, you can make your own lunch to eat in the little basic huts, and just buy a drink from a bar. In Austria for example, prices are higher in Kitzbuhel for both accommodation and eating/drinking owing to the name and the cosmopolitan crowd who go there - at the end of the day the bar owners and hoteliers are not stupid!

It is like comparing living costs in the Midlands to living in London!
Rather a bad day on the slopes than a good day in the office!

We're just about to go back on our 2nd Swiss ski holiday this year to the same hotel, the Victoria Lauberhorn in Wengen with Crystal. It isn't cheap, but its not expensive either, especially as Crystal are doing 2 for 1 on the lift passes, and the package includes flights and a coach transfer to Wengen and the hotel includes a great spa with a good pool, water massage and rapid river, etc. Personally I like the Swiss food more than France (Also had a week in the 3 valleys last week) and the Jungfrau in particular is very pretty when compared to Paradiski, 3 Valleys or Les 2 Alpes.

If you can find a good deal, go to Switzerland, especially Jungfrau. Enough to keep anyone happy for a week (or two).

Eating out is OK. At the restaurant Almendhubel you can get a nice salad and an enormous Snitzel and chips for about CHF25 which is plenty for 2 to share (I'd defy most people to eat it solo). Alternatively, you can buy a baguette and eat it in the many indoor heated picnic rooms under the lift stations (unlike many places in France).

Thanks Chris Brookes ... looking forward to it - some new powder looks likely next week, so conditions should be good. The hotel is a real treat as well.

Well, Mürren had 30cm in the village today and Wengen got 15cm.

This Sunday they are expecting snow but not sure on the amounts yet and then it warms up to just above average temps with good sunny weather!!

All looking good !!

I went up to Birg in a blizzard on the 26 Jan. I had lost the rest of my guided ski party and was looking for them. I could barely see 20 yards as I went down the road towards the top of the piste where it meets the Schilthorn black. By the time I got to the junction and turned right I couldn't see the end of my arm! there was a foot of new powder on the piste. I got very disorientated and didn't know whether I was skiing forwards or backwards. After about 20 minutes I managed to ski to the lift at the bottom. That was the first time I was, to put it politely, a little apprehensive when skiing.

Went down on the cable car and met up with the party in Murren where it was like another day. It was like being off piste on piste.

Roll on week on Saturday

You were with a Guide and they left you behind?
