After Ian's comment about researching lift pass prices before he books next year, I got thinking that a ski holiday cost comparison website (where you could see all lift pass prices, beer and food prices) would be a good idea. Then I thought about the work involved, and how, by the time it was done, it would be time to change them all again!

You've made a good start there Andy! Carry on

The Where to Ski and Snowboard guide does exactly what you describe in its resort price index listings and takes into account lift pass, ski hire, lessons, food and drink.

The Eastern European resorts, unsurprisingly, come out as the cheapest but Passo Tonale, Alpbach and Puy St Vincent are uo there with them for value for money holidays.

Can you give us a link as I've only seen the resort price index referred to on individual resort pages (as a score/rank). I was thinking more along the lines of the information being presented as a table with graphs and things! lol. I was under the impression the WTSS price index was just for food and drinks...Still a good idea though.

A table, such as you describe, is on page 29 of the 2012 edition. There's a whole chapter with any number of comprehensive tables: overall, lift pass, food and drink, eurozone, dollar zone, Swiss Franc zone! The website is www.wtss.co.uk but I think the complete RPI tables are only in the book.

I've just found these, a bit old though:

http://www.passportdiary.com/ski/ski-lift-passes-price-directory

Don't know how old this is:

http://www.igluski.com/ski-passes

I was thinking something like this but also including average prices for different types of food, beer, soft drinks etc.

It could include many other things like costs for leisure activities, taxis, buses etc.

A lot of work there for someone! :D

Top work Andy!

We do have a lot more lift pass price info that we'll be pushing up onto our resort pages (hopefully) later this week, and I'll make sure we've included all the info from this thread.

It might have to wait until after the ski show though...

Why worry about lift pass prices? Like everything else in life, the prices go up. If you want to ski somewhere, you'll ski it even if the lift pass has gone up in price from last year.
Alternatively, ski somewhere not as good for a cheaper lift pass price and never go to that place you really wanted to 8)

I'm not worried, I get a free season pass! :D

But if you're torn between a few resorts, having easy access to resort price comparisons could be helpful.

What this lift pass price list proves is, as in life generally, is that you get what you pay for.
I've not been to Alpbach, and I'm told it's charming, but its mountain is small with a handful of lifts. Given those factors, does the lift pass price represent good value?
