I can guarantee if you go down a black thinking it's a blue, you will be black AND blue yourself by the time you reach the bottom

Ally
Only if you can't ski well enough. If you get to the bottom of a black in that state, you should go back to the blues and keep off the reds, Ally.

Another post has just reminded me I do know the Santons run. Responsible for my one fall this year, on the first afternoon.

Run was sheer ice for the first half, followed by a long walk to get into VDI, the snowboarders with us were less than amused. Apart from my fall and it's certainly no good for a beginner.
Bon. Allez!

Nervous skiers can always take the cable car down, there is no need to suffer if the runs are icy or crowded. It's meant to be fun not an exercise in survival.

....is the correct answer.

That is obviously the correct answer, and people shouldn't be embarrassed to do that - a new skier in our group did that every day after the first experience. However I think the opinions being expressed in the thread are that some resorts are incorrectly labelling some of the runs to appeal to a wider range of skiing abilities.

A 'nervous' skier may reasonably expect to be within their capabilities on a 'blue' graded run. If they see a blue run they may assume that they can ski it relatively comfortably and not know that the better option for them is the gondola. If the piste gradings cannot be relied on, then this knowledge only comes with skiing a mountain, something a beginner wouldn't have done yet.

A lot of blues I have skied on are tracks, and can be quite intimidating for beginners or nervous intermediates, especially when people come flying down them or ski schools hog the line

Piste Gradings for any given resort, relate to that resort only. Val D'Isere (for example) has steep pistes and a red there, could be graded black elsewhere.

Slope gradings are not standardised, and there is no definite gradient % to base a resort choice upon. I think that books like WTSS can help with choice.

A Blue run in crowded icy conditions can surprise very experienced and confident skiers, and a short straightforward Black run in deep snow can be very manageable for an early parallel turner.
